औरंगजेब ने रौशनआरा को धीमा जहर देकर मरवाया! रौशनआरा की हत्या मुगलिया राजनीति का एक ऐसा काला और रहस्यमय अध्याय है जो मुगलों की राजनीतिक हवस को अच्छी तरह उजागर करता है। मुगल शहजादों को केवल राज्य चाहिए था, राज्य के मार्ग में आने वाला प्रत्येक रिश्ता उनके लिए असह्य था।
ई.1657-58 में शाहजहाँ के पुत्रों में हुए उत्तराधिकार के युद्ध में रौशनआरा ने औरंगजेब का साथ दिया था जिसके कारण औरंगजेब को इस खूनी संघर्ष में विजय प्राप्त हुई थी। औरंगजेब रौशनआरा द्वारा किए गए इस उपकार को भुला नहीं सकता था। इसलिए उसने बादशाह बनते ही रौशनआरा को पांच लाख रुपए ईनाम में दिए तथा उसे शाह-बेगम बना दिया। कुछ ही समय में सल्तनत में उसका रुतबा इतना बढ़ गया था कि फ्रैंच यात्री टैवरनियर ने उसे ‘ग्राण्ड-बेगम’ कहा है।
कुछ समय पश्चात् रौशनआरा के मन में दौलत एवं सत्ता पाने की भूख बढ़ गई। इस हवस के चलते वह उन कामों में भी हस्तक्षेप करने लगी जो उसके अधिकार क्षेत्र से बाहर थे। ई.1662 में जब औरंगजेब गंभीर रूप से बीमार पड़ा तो रौशनआरा ने औरंगजेब की शाही मुहर हथिया ली और उसके बल पर अमीरों एवं राजपूत सरदारों को धमकाने लगी।
रौशनाआरा ने औरंगजेब के बीमारी की बात छिपाने के लिए औरंगजेब के महल के बाहर अपने विश्वस्त सिपाहियों का पहरा बैठा दिया तथा किसी को भी औरंगजेब से मिलने की मनाही कर दी। यहाँ तक कि वह औरंगजेब की चारों बेगमों दिलरास बानू, नवाब बाई, औरंगाबादी महल तथा उदयपुरी महल को भी औरंगजेब के कक्ष में नहीं जाने देती थी। इस कारण औरंगजेब की बेगमें रौशनआरा के खिलाफ हो गईं।
हालांकि रौशनआरा ने औरंगजेब के बीमार होने की बात सबसे छुपाई थी किंतु औरंगजेब के चारों शहजादों- सुल्तान मुहम्मद, जहांदार शाह, आजमशाह तथा मुअज्जम शाह को बादशाह के बीमार होने की बात पता चल गई। जब औरंगजेब काफी बीमार हो गया तो रौशनआरा ने अपने विश्वास के मुस्लिम अमीरों तथा राजपूत सरदारों को पत्र लिखकर उन्हें शहजादे आजम के पक्ष में तैयार रहने के लिए कहा ताकि यदि औरंगजेब की मृत्यु हो जाए तो शहजादे आजम को अगला बादशाह बनाया जा सके।

शहजादा मुअज्जम को इन पत्रों के बारे में पता चल गया। उसने इस बात की शिकायत अपनी माँ नवाब बाई से की। नवाब बाई आग बबूला हो गई। वह यह कहते हुए औरंगजेब के कमरे में घुस गई कि रौशनआरा जो कुछ भी कर रही है, गलत है क्योंकि बादशाह औरंगजेब अभी जीवित है और स्वस्थ है। इस पर रौशनआरा ने नवाब बाई के बाल पकड़कर उसे औरंगजेब के कक्ष से बाहर निकाल दिया।
जब कुछ माह बाद औरंगजेब स्वस्थ हुआ तो शहजादे मुअज्जम ने बादशाह को बताया कि रौशनआरा ने किस प्रकार शहजादे की माँ को अपमानित किया है तथा उसे बालों से पकड़कर घसीटा है। इस पर औरंगजेब रौशनआरा से नाराज हुआ तथा उसने रौशनआरा को सबके सामने फटकार लगाई। नवाब बाई बेगम के कहने से औरंगजेब ने रौशनआरा से शाही मुहर वापस ले ली। इसके बाद औरंगजेब और रौशनआरा के सम्बन्ध कभी भी सामान्य नहीं हुए किंतु कोई विकल्प नहीं होने के कारण औरंगजेब ने उसे शाही-बेगम के पद से नहीं हटाया।
जब ई.1666 में जहानआरा ने शाह-बेगम बनना स्वीकार कर लिया तो औरंगजेब ने रौशनआरा को अपने दरबार से निकाल दिया। अब रौशनआरा के लिए लाल किले में रहना असंभव हो गया। वह उन्हीं शाही-बेगमों के बीच उपेक्षित शहजादी की तरह कैसे रह सकती थी जिन्हें वह विगत नौ सालों से कठोर अनुशासन में रखती आई थी!
रौशनआरा ने औरंगजेब से कहा कि मुझे राजधानी दिल्ली से बाहर घने जंगल के बीच एक महल बनवाने की अनुमति दी जाए। मैं अपना शेष जीवन दुनिया के जंजालों से दूर रहकर ऊपर वाले की खिदमत में गुजारना चाहती हूँ। औरंगजेब ने रौशनआरा को उसी क्षण इसकी अनुमति दे दी क्योंकि वह स्वयं भी चाहता था कि रौशनआरा लाल किले से दूर रहे ताकि जहानआरा बिना किसी बाधा के अपना काम कर सके।
वास्तव में रौशनआरा मुगलिया राजनीति के मंच पर अपनी पारी खेल चुकी थी और अब समय आ गया था कि वह मुगलिया राजनीति के मंच से अदृश्य हो जाए किंतु धन और सत्ता की भूखी रौशनआरा इस बात को समझ नहीं पाई। उसने प्रकट रूप से तो दिखावा किया कि वह सांसारिक मोह-माया से दूर जा रही है किंतु सत्ता और धन के प्रति उसकी लालसा नष्ट नहीं हुई थी। उसने बादशाह औरंगजेब की शाही मुहर चुरा ली और चोरी-छिपे उसका दुरुपयोग करने लगी।
जब कुछ ऐसे शाही फरमान औरंगजेब के सामने आए जिन पर बादशाह की मुहर तो थी किंतु वे बादशाह ने जारी नहीं किए थे तो औरंगजेब को रौशनआरा पर संदेह हो गया। उसने रौशनआरा को भला-बुरा कहा। इस पर रौशनआरा ने औरंगजेब के पुत्र शाह आजम के साथ मिलकर औरंगजेब के विरुद्ध षड़यंत्र रचा ताकि औरंगजेब की जगह शाह आजम को बादशाह बनाया जा सके।
औरंगजेब को इस षड़यंत्र का पता चल गया। अब औरंगजेब के पास रौशनआरा की हत्या करना ही एकमात्र विकल्प बच गया और वह रौशनआरा से छुटकारा पाने का उपाय सोचने लगा। उसने जंगल के बीच मकान बनाकर रह रही रौशनआरा को धीमा जहर दिए जाने की व्यवस्था की ताकि शाही हरम की औरतों, दरबारी अमीरों एवं आम रियाया को इस बात की जानकारी न हो सके। कुछ तत्कालीन लेखकों ने इस तथ्य का उल्लेख किया है।
धीमे जहर के प्रभाव से रौशनआरा ई.1671 में मर गई। दिल्ली के रौशनआरा बाग में उसका मकबरा बनवाया गया जिसे अब बारादरी के नाम से जाना जाता है। इस बारादरी के बीच में मिट्टी की एक कब्र है जिसमें दफ़्न रौशनआरा की देह आज भी कयामत होने का इंतजार कर रही है ताकि खुदा उसके करमों का हिसाब करके उसके साथ न्याय कर सके। रौशनआरा की हत्या का रहस्य भी इसी कब्र में और शहजादी के कंकाल में दफ्न है।
रौशनाआरा की कब्र पर कोई छत नहीं बनाई गई है ताकि रौशनआरा की रूह को कयामत के दिन कब्र से बाहर निकलने में कोई कठिनाई न हो। इस कब्र के चारों ओर सफेद संगमरमर का एक कटहरा बनाया गया है जो इस कब्र के शाही कब्र होने की घोषणा करता है। रौशनआरा ने आगरा में एक नगर बसाया था जिसे अब रौशनआरा मौहल्ला कहा जाता है और यह जहानआरा द्वारा आगरा में बनवाई गई जामा मस्जिद के पीछे स्थित है।
जिस औरंगजेब ने अपने बाप को आजीवन कैद में रखा, जिस औरंगजेब ने आपने तीन भाइयों और दर्जनों भतीजों का खून किया, उस औरंगजेब के लिए बहिन रौशनआरा की हत्या कोई शोक की बात नहीं थी, फिर भी जब रौशनआरा की मृत्यु हुई तो औरंगजेब ने उसके लिए शोक मनाया।
