162. इब्राहीम लोदी ने अपने विजयी सेनापति को छल से पकड़ लिया!

सुल्तान इब्राहीम लोदी ने अपने पिता सिकंदर लोदी का सपना पूरा करने के लिए आजम हुमायूं शेरवानी नामक एक शक्तिशाली अमीर को ग्वालियर पर हमला करने भेजा। हुमायूं शेरवानी के पास अपने पचास हजार घुड़सवार थे। सुल्तान इब्राहीम लोदी ने उसे 30 हजार घुड़सवार तथा 300 हाथीसवार योद्धा भी प्रदान किए।

आजम हुमायूं चम्बल से लेकर ग्वालियर तक के मार्ग की समस्त गढ़ियों पर अधिकार जमाता हुआ, ग्वालियर तक पहुंच गया। आजम हुमायूं की आंधी में तोमरों की गढ़ियां खाली होती चली गईं तथा तोमर सैनिक भाग-भाग कर ग्वालियर के दुर्ग में एकत्रित होने लगे। इस दुर्ग में पच्चीस हजार से अधिक मनुष्य नहीं आ सकते थे। अतः दुर्ग शीघ्र ही सैनिकों से भर गया।

आजम हुमायूं भी अपनी भारी सेना के साथ आया तथा दुर्ग को घेर कर बैठ गया। उसने दुर्ग के दरवाजों के सामने साबात बनवाए तथा उन पर तोपें जमाकर दुर्ग पर पत्थर के गोले बरसाने लगा। दुर्ग के भीतर से राजपूत सैनिक जलते हुए कपड़े, तीर तथा पत्थरों की बरसात करने लगे। इस प्रकार दोनों पक्षों में घमासान छिड़ गया।

लगभग तीन-चार वर्ष तक दोनों पक्षों में भयानक युद्ध चलता रहा। इसके बाद आजम हुमायूं की सेना तोमर राजा विक्रमादित्य पर भारी पड़ने लगी। जब सुल्तान इब्राहीम लोदी को उसके गुप्तचरों ने सूचना दी कि आजम हुमायूं सफलता के बहुत निकट पहुंच गया है तो इब्राहीम लोदी बेचैन हो गया।

सुल्तान नहीं चाहता था कि जो सफलता उसके पिता सिकंदर लोदी को प्राप्त नहीं हो सकी थी, वह सफलता आजम हुमायूं को मिले। सुल्तान इस सफलता का श्रेय स्वयं लेना चाहता था। इसलिए सुल्तान ने आजम हुमायूं को परिदृश्य से हटाने का निर्णय लिया। उसने बहुत से अमीरों को उनके सैनिकों के साथ ग्वालियर भेज दिया तथा आजम हुमायूं को सुल्तान से मिलने के लिए दिल्ली बुलवाया।

नए अमीरों के दल ने ग्वालियर दुर्ग के चारों ओर पड़ी हुई मुस्लिम सेना पर घेरा डाल दिया तथा आजम हुमायूं शेरवानी को सुल्तान का आदेश बताया। आजम हुमायूं समझ गया कि सुल्तान इब्राहीम लोदी आजम हुमायूं शेरवानी के साथ कोई बड़ी चाल चलने वाला है।

आजम हुमायूं के सलाहकारों ने उसे सलाह दी कि जब जीत मिलने ही वाली है, तब वह युद्ध को इस तरह बीच में छोड़कर दिल्ली नहीं जाए किंतु हुमायूं आजम युद्ध के इस संवेदनशील बिंदु पर सुल्तान के आदेशों की अवहेलना करके अपने तथा अपने साथियों के प्राण संकट में नहीं डालना चाहता था। हुमायूं के एक तरफ तोमर थे जो किले से आग बरसा रहे थे तो दूसरी ओर दिल्ली के सैनिक थे जो उसे चारों ओर से घेरकर बैठ गए थे। इसलिए आजम हुमायूं अपने थोड़े से अनुचरों के साथ दिल्ली के लिए रवाना हो गया।

आजम हुमायूं के कुछ विश्वसनीय सलाहकार उसे चम्बल नदी तक पहुंचाने आए। उन्होंने मार्ग में आजम हुमायूं से पुनः प्रार्थना की कि इस तरह मौत के मुंह में जाने से तो अच्छा है कि बगावत कर दी जाए तथा इब्राहीम लोदी को सबक सिखाया जाए किंतु आजम हुमायूं ने इस प्रस्ताव को स्वीकार नहीं किया। अंततः वह दिन भी आया जब आजम हुमायूं सुल्तान इब्राहीम लोदी के समक्ष उपस्थित हुआ। इब्राहीम ने इस पल की अच्छे से तैयारी कर रखी थी। सुल्तान के संकेत पर आजम हुमायूं को बंदी बनाकर जंजीरों में जकड़ लिया गया तथा उसे मजबूत जेल में बंद करके कड़ा पहरा लगा दिया गया।

इस प्रकार दुर्दांत आजम हुमायूं शेरवानी जिसने पूर्व सुल्तान सिकंदर लोदी का जमकर विरोध किया था, साधारण अपराधियों की तरह कैदी होकर रह गया।

उस काल की राजनीतिक चौसर ऐसी ही धोखेबाज, रक्त-प्रिय तथा सिद्धांतहीन थी। इसलिए केवल इब्राहीम को दोष देना व्यर्थ है। यदि सुल्तान ने मानवता को ताक पर रखकर आजम हुमायूं को बंदी नहीं बनाया होता तो कौन जाने ग्वालियर की विजय के मद में अंधा होकर आजम हुमायूं ही एक दिन सुल्तान इब्राहीम लोदी की छाती पर चढ़ बैठता। दिल्ली सल्तनत की घृणित राजनीति में कोई किसी का सगा नहीं था।

सुल्तान इब्राहीम लोदी की राह के दो बड़े कांटे निकल चुके थे। जलाल खाँ मारा जा चुका था और आजम हुमायूं जेल में बंद था। अब केवल एक ही बड़ा कांटा बचा था- राजा विक्रमादित्य तोमर। उसे उखाड़ फैंकना अब अधिक कठिन नहीं था। सुल्तान स्वयं एक सेना लेकर ग्वालियर के लिए रवाना हुआ।

ग्वालियर के दुर्ग की तलहटी में सुल्तान के लिए दीवाने-खास का प्रबंध किया गया ताकि सुल्तान अमीरों से सलाह कर सके। दिल्ली सल्तनत के समस्त अमीर आज्ञाकारी अनुचरों की भांति इस दरबार में उपस्थित हुए। सुल्तान ने समस्त अमीरों से दुर्ग को शीघ्र भंग करने के सम्बन्ध में सुझाव मांगे।

अहमद यादगार नामक मुगलकालीन लेखक ने लिखा है कि राजा विक्रमादित्य ने सात मन सोना, श्यामसुंदर नामक अपना निजी हाथी तथा अपनी पुत्री सुल्तान को देने का प्रस्ताव किया किंतु सुल्तान ने उस प्रस्ताव को स्वीकार करने से मना कर दिया। अहमद यादगार उस काल का सर्वाधिक अविश्वसनीय लेखक था। उसने सिकंदर लोदी की पराजयों को भी विजय के रूप में प्रदर्शित किया था। अतः उसके इस कथन का विश्वास नहीं किया जा सकता।

अमीरों के सुझाव पर सुल्तान इब्राहीम लोदी ने बादलगढ़ की दीवारों में बारूद भरकर उनमें पलीता दिखा दिया। उल्लेखनीय है कि ग्वालियर दुर्ग के पांच दरवाजों में से एक द्वार बादलगढ़ कहलाता था। यह इस दुर्ग का सबसे मजबूत दरवाजा था किंतु बारूद के धमाकों से उसकी दीवार हवा में उड़ गई।

बादलगढ़ के टूटने से ग्वालियर दुर्ग का मान भंग हो गया। बहुत से राजपूत सिपाही मारे गए। जीवित बचे हुए सिपाही भैंरोंपौर बंद करके उसके पीछे चले गए। सुल्तान के सिपाहियों ने बादलगढ़ के भीतर स्थित शिवजी का अत्यंत प्राचीन मंदिर तोड़ डाला। मंदिर में लगे धातु के विशाल नंदी को उठाकर दिल्ली ले जाया गया और वहाँ बगदाद दरवाजे के बाहर डाल दिया गया। बाद में जब अकबर मुगलों का बादशाह हुआ तो उसने नंदी को आग में गलवा दिया तथा उसकी धातु से तोपें तथा बर्तन बनवाए।
